Ciao!!

Just arrived in Roma last night and met my host family. I have two host sisters Caterina, 14, and Margherita, 17. They all speak english really well, Maria(thier mum) especially, and so do all Caterina's friends at school. They live in a large apartment 5km from the centre of Rome and from the balcony other than the large park all you can see are apartment buildings everywhere. Because everyone lives in apartments there are parked cars everywhere and everywhere is always really busy no matter what time it is. There is also graffiti everywhere, which i love.

We went to school today, which was really weird because it's a lot more different than i thought it would be. All Caterina's friends were really eager to meet me, and to try out their english on me which was really good because it turns out im the only Australian student going there which sort of sucks. The school is an eight story building with really small classrooms and like the rest of the city is covered with graffiti. The grounds of the school is pretty much an empty car park, which is really awesome but the thing i found weirdest is that there are no teachers anywhere and everyone smokes in school.

Really missing everyone and surprisingly i'm actually missing school quite a bit. I have to keep reminding myself that it's only four weeks.. and hopefully soon enough i'll be able to have better conversations with everyone. One thing that did make me feel at home was when i went to bed last night i looked up at the wall and it was covered with Jonny Depp posters, all the people at school are also asking me about different movies and books that i know.. they all love Harry Potter and were upset when they found out i didn't read Twilight.

For the next three weeks i'll be staying here and going to school with Caterina, so hopefully i'll learn a lot more italian. Then after that i'll be going to Venezia where i'll visit the islands of Murano and Burano and then onto Firenze before i go back to Roma so i can catch the plane home.

Anyway we're about to go out for the afternoon so i can get to know the area a bit better, because i just looked at a map and realised i though i was on the opposite side of the city from where i actually am.

I'll have photos up soon. Miss everyone so much!!

Ciao Anna rosa!!!!
you made it - it felt very weird walking back to the car after you went through those doors to gate 53.
I can't wait to see some pics of where you are and school does sound strange. You are a legend Han. We are all well and Luka did a cool dance in his school show - he has the groove. So glad you did this blog. will check it again after work today. Mxxx

Oh hi there!

Roma sounds great.

Pics please!

That's so great that there are lots of people who know English who want to practice with you. Make sure you don't speak too much English though!

I went to the travel agent yesterday and started shopping around for round the world tickets - very exciting. Will probably be going from Sydney to Los Angeles -> Mexico City -> (Cuba, but not officially because the US won't let you in if you've been there) -> NY -> London -> somewhere else in Europe -> Bangkok, Thailand -> home. Cool, hey?

Also, we are having a dress-up party next week themed "Favourite cult film character" - am thinking of going as Mia Wallaca (Uma Thurman) from Pulp Fiction, Clementine from Eternal Sunshine or buying a skeleton suit and being Donnie Darko. Any ideas?

k thx bai! see you really soon!

Yummy recipe for you Han Mxxx

Recipe: Lemongrass Tofu

600g firm tofu
2 lemongrass stalks, white part only, roughly chopped
3 cloves garlic, peeled and roughly chopped
2 long red chillies, roughly chopped
½ teaspoon sea salt
1/3 teaspoon caster sugar
vegetable oil for frying
1 handful chives, finely chopped, to serve
soy and chilli dipping sauce (see following recipe) to serve

With a knife, score lines 1cm apart into the surface of the tofu, then cut tofu into four squares, and set aside. Place lemongrass, garlic, chilli, salt and sugar in a mortar and pound with a pestle to form a coarse paste. Rub paste onto tofu pieces and stand for 20 minutes to allow tofu to absorb the flavours. Heat a little oil in a frypan over a high heat. When hot, add tofu and reduce heat to medium to stop marinade from burning. Cook tofu for 2–3 minutes on each side until it turns a light golden brown. Transfer tofu to a serving platter, scatter with chopped chives and serve with soy and chilli dipping sauce. Serves 4 as part of a banquet.

soy and chilli dipping sauce
120ml soy sauce
juice of ½ lime
¼ teaspoon caster sugar
½ long red chilli, deseeded and thinly sliced
Combine soy, lime juice and sugar in a small bowl and stir until sugar dissolves. Pour soy mixture into 6 individual dipping bowls and scatter chilli slices over each bowl. Serves 6.

Hi Han,

What an awesome experience - full on, but awesome.

It's always really difficult when everyone around is talking another language and you feel quite isolated. But time will help you feel more settled.

Nathan and I want to go to Italy next year for about a month so now you can tell us where to go!

Keep us updated and stay warm.
